15 speed boats inspired by cars
Supercars are the playthings of the rich and famous, so what better to enjoy on holiday than a powerboat inspired by their favourite model?
- The eight-seat Aston Martin AM37 has been designed to be ‘the ultimate day cruiser’ and features two Mercury 430bhp engines, for a top speed of 57mph. Its carbon fibre, leather and metallic trim is inspired by Aston Martin’s supercar range.
- The Beneteau Sea Drive Concept has a dashboard familiar to any Peugeot owners. The boat has Peugeot’s i-Cockpit controls, including a smaller steering wheel for “more agile handling” and the same kind of toggle switches used in the Peugeot 3008 SUV. Some of the materials are based on the firm’s GT trim levels including leather, copper top-stitching and chrome and satin accents.
- It has not gone into production yet, but the Lexus LFA-inspired Sport Yacht Concept boasts a stunning carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic hull and upper deck, for a seamless design. It is powered by two 5.0-litre Lexus V8 engines, for a total of 880bhp.
- Designed to carry up to 11 people in air-conditioned comfort, this speed boat is a joint effort of Sacs, Fiat, Martini and Lancia. A RIB design, the Lancia di Lancia has a fibreglass hull and an electric soft-top – ideal for keeping out a 60mph breeze.
- Launched at the debut of the Jaguar XF Sportbrake in 2012, the Ian Callum-designed Concept Speedboat took inspiration from the Jaguar D-Type. Style takes a front seat, with room for just three people, despite its six-metre length.
- You may remember the bright yellow Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, but you probably did not know there was also a floating tribute to it. The collaboration between AMG and Cigarette Racing bore this zero-emission powerboat using 12 motors from the electric supercar, for a total of 2,200hp.
- You may know the name Henrik Fisker from the Tesla-rivalling electric supercar brand, but Fisker has also partnered with Italian yacht-builder Benetti to create a 50m superyacht. The stunning result features a jacuzzi, bars, cinema room and gym.
- Mercedes is quite keen on the water it seems, this time collaborating with Silver Arrows Marine to create a 14m dayboat inspired by the Silver Arrow racing cars of the 1930s. Power comes from two Yanmar diesel engines producing a combined 960bhp.
- The Niniette 66 is named after Ettore Bugatti’s daughter and takes styling cues from the Bugatti Chiron hypercar. It is built from carbon fibre and features sponsons for improved stability at high speeds. Bugatti’s design director described it as “a genuine member of the Bugatti family”.
- Launched alongside the Skoda VisionC concept (which went on to become the Skoda Superb), the VisionSea was Skoda’s first plug-in hybrid model. It features a 180bhp petrol engine, 270bhp electric motor and a six-speed DSG gearbox. It can sail for 50 nautical miles on electric power and 980 nautical miles in total.
- In 2017, Mercedes-AMG again joined forces with Cigarette Racing to celebrate 50 years of AMG and a decade of partnership with the speed boat builder. A total of 3,100bhp and lightweight carbon-fibre design should ensure you win any impromptu races between Monaco and Nice.
- The Aston Martin Project Neptune is a three-person submarine aimed at rich superyacht owners. If getting in the water with a snorkel is not your cup of tea, a personal submarine could take you to new depths.
- Need to get ashore in style? The Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari is probably the world’s most flamboyant tender. With a hydrojet motor giving it a top speed of around 40 knots, it is incredibly quick, too.
- Pine for your Porsche while at sea? This superyacht from Studio F.A Porsche and builders Dynamiq is inspired by models like the Porsche 911, even sharing its houndstooth fabric. An output of 12,594bhp ensures you will be at your destination in no time and it even has a hybrid powertrain for improved efficiency.
- If you want a floating Corvette, you might need to give Marine Technology Inc a ring. Its ZR48 has a dashboard inspired by the C6 Corvette and exterior design cues like its black paint and even four circular taillights. With 2,700bhp, it also had enough firepower to make its four-wheeled equivalent look weedy.
