A boat with an interesting history - Classic Laurent Giles Design Channel Class No 28
At Boatshed we pride ourselves on really getting to know the boats we have for sale. This means from time to time we come across vessels with such an interesting history it’s worth an extramention.
This week the spotlight is on a Classic Laurent Giles Design Channel Class No 28.
You may already be wondering where you have seen her before and that is because she was featured in the Sept 2015 PBO magazine and in Classic Boat November 2006. Peter Poland from PBO said “In 2013 I watched her powering through a heavy swell on the CRAB race off the IIe deBrehat – a sight to behold”
Designed by Laurent Giles & Partners and built by Moody’s on the River Hamble in 1938. The Yachtsman’s annual Who’s Who 1938-39 said ‘She was stiff, extremely handy and light on the helm under all conditions, close hauled, reaching and running’
Not only is she a true classic, her who’s who of previous owners is impressive – they include;
- Lord Russell – Lawyer and author involved in the War Crimes Commission (WW2)
- Dr RC Evans – Dr Evans introduced oxygen for the successful ascent of Everest
- Chris Elliot – Captain of an Antarctic supply vessel, sister to the Endurance
- Hammond Innes – Famous author, experienced yachtsman and benefactor to ASTA (Association of Sea Training Organisations). He and his wife Dorothy, an author in her own right, both travelled and raced in her. The dedication in one of his books ‘The Wreck of the Mary Deare’ was to the crew of his yacht. This book later became a film.
The current owners have lovingly cared, restored and maintained her for the past 24 years. They have taken her to race in classic yacht regattas including Plymouth, Fowey and Falmouth. They have also taken her annually to France where in 2013 she won her class in a classic yacht regatta in Brittany.
She is seeking a dedicated and caring owner to keep her bringing in the awards.
