a selection of sailing blocks on top of drawings

Harken, the sailing hardware manufacturer, has unveiled an expanded range of Zircon blocks. Six new 29 millimetre sheave sizes have been introduced alongside triple sheave versions in 40 and 57-millimetre configurations. The range increases the firm’s Zircon block offering from eight to eighteen models.

The Zircon blocks, named after Zirconium, the metallic element known for its durability, have been engineered to address critical challenges in sailing hardware, particularly friction reduction and responsiveness. The blocks feature seven industrial ceramic ball bearings mounted in engineered ceramic caged races.

The unique cage system design prevents bearings from bunching up or interfering with each other, creating what Harken describes as a ‘very free-running block.’

According to the product description, the ceramic bearings boast a compression strength of 700 per cent, superior to traditional stainless steel bearings. This durability translates into minimal energy loss and exceptional performance. All Zircon blocks also have smooth, soft attachment points to save fastener weight and better align the load path.

Earlier this year, the firm was the official sponsor for the America’s Cup. Harken asserts that these new Zircon blocks are the ‘most efficient small boat blocks’ it has ever produced.

Early testing has demonstrated improvements in sail control and boat speed. Harken has reported that trimmers react quicker, with sheet movements leading to more precisely matched sail shapes. The new sizes extend the application of Zircon blocks to control lines better and offer greater flexibility in sail adjustment.

While Harken emphasises that no single block is a universal solution, the Zircon line represents a significant advancement in sailing hardware. The new Zircon blocks are now available for purchase through Harken UK.
