Iconic racing yacht restored
The renowned Sparkman & Stephens One Tonner, Clarionet, has undergone a process of restoration to bring her back to her former glory. Previously, she was successfully optimised for IRC, but has now been returned to her original specification with the aim of racing classics.
Built in 1966 by Clare Lallow’s yard in Cowes, Isle of Wight, all aspects of Clarionet have been looked at and re-worked, including restoring her original deck configuration and wooden rig. Clarionet’s new rig and unique ‘plank’ boom, were both fashioned in solid wood from the Sparkman and Stephens original plans.
For the yacht’s new sails, sailcloth manufacturer Bainbridge International collaborated with Banks Sails to produce a set of narrow panelled mainsail and mitre cut headsails, using Bainbridge SPX Classic Cream balanced polyester woven sailcloth.
“We are so pleased to have been involved further with Clarionet’s on-going journey and help to bring her back to her classic roots,” says Gavin Lacey, commercial director at Bainbridge International.
“We would typically look at bringing a boat into the 21st century with the latest materials and the most hi-tech look. This project has required a gentler approach. Our SPX Classic Cream sailcloth is a high-quality balanced polyester and yet looks the part on a classic yacht. It could be said, the best of both worlds.”
In her opening season in 1966, Clarionet won almost every race she took part in, including Cowes Week, RORC St Malo Race and went on to win hundreds of races in her 55 year career. The restored Clarionet’s first engagement is British Classic Week, which is currently taking place in the Solent.
