IYT adopts SailTies for digital logbooks

International Yacht Training (IYT), which provides yacht training, maritime certification, and safety programmes worldwide, has replaced paper logbooks with the SailTies app as the preferred method for recording boating experiences.

This development follows an existing partnership that enables IYT customers to import verified IYT certificates into SailTies.

SailTies is a free mobile app designed to assist sailors in maintaining a digital record of their sailing activities. The app features include GPS tracking, voyage summaries, a qualification wallet and automatic resume export.

A recent update to the SailTies app enables skippers to sign off on voyages digitally, creating an authenticated record that meets IYT standards and can serve as an alternative to paper logbooks. IYT says it will also use SailTies-generated resumes to assess student experience in both recreational and commercial courses.

More than 24 jurisdictions and a growing number of maritime associations recognise IYT certifications. Over 300 schools in 58 countries follow the IYT curriculum.

Chris Jacobs, co-founder of SailTies, tells MIN that the firm is “absolutely open” to partnerships with other yacht training organisations in the future. “We already have partnerships with Sail Canada and NauticEd and are in conversations with others that we can’t mention just yet,” he says. “Users on the platform have added certificates manually from over 200 issuing bodies around the world, so there is a big demand for it.”

He adds: “IYT students can still use the paper logbook if they prefer; we all appreciate that some sailors won’t want to switch over to an app. But their preferred method is now the SailTies app because of all the benefits it brings.”

Christian Fry of IYT says: “With very little effort from our team, SailTies has transformed how our students can record their sailing. The app provides them with a way to document their voyages and certificates that is fit for 2025. It is also seamless for our staff to evaluate their experience level using the automatic SailTies resume.”

Thomas Guy, co-founder of SailTies, adds: “Partnering with IYT has been an exciting journey. We’re proud that SailTies is now preferred over paper logbooks, making life easier for sailors worldwide.”

SailTies is available for download on the App Store and Google Play.
