Japanese firms join forces to decarbonise shipping industry
Three of Japan’s leading marine engine manufacturers, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Yanmar Power Technology, and Japan Engine Corporation have joined forces to create, and jointly own, a new company, HyEng Corporation.
The idea is to pursue joint development of marine hydrogen-fuelled ship engines, aiming to improve Japan’s decarbonisation efforts and promote the development of the shipbuilding and maritime industry.
The joint venture will concentrate on the maintenance and operation of the developed engines.
HyEng Corporation aims to introduce hydrogen-fueled engines to the market by 2025.
Although the company will focus on the engines, it also aims to advance international standards and rules for hydrogen fuel supply systems and then integrate those systems.
The new company was first announced in May at the Zero Emission Ships seminar, organised by The Nippon Foundation.
