The third weekend in September sees the return of the Little Britain Challenge Cup 2018, an annual regatta for the construction industry organised since 1988. This year, therefore, is its 31st running. The event grew from the very modest beginnings of three co-consultants on one particular construction project (Little Britain – in London, hence its name) deciding they wanted to do something other than go on golfing days, to the heady days, pre-recession, when it was the largest single event regatta in Europe with over 250 yachts competing over four days. The event has moved with the times and is now a more manageable 50 boat regatta but with the same mantra of fun, networking and competition, all in a Corinthian spirit.

The competitors will start arriving on the evening of Thursday, 13th September ready for the two days of racing on Friday, 14th and Saturday, 15th September. They may look relaxed but when they get on the water the rivalry can become intense as they battle over a five race series for individual trophies as well as the coveted overall Little Britain trophy. This year, the regatta base will be Shepards Marina with the racing being organised and managed by the Island Sailing Club. Again not surprisingly, for any regatta the shoreside refreshment and entertainment is of equal importance and this will all take place in The Sugar Store, also at Shepards Marina.

Of equal importance for the organisers is the opportunity for the industry to give something back, and we use the event to raise funds for our named charities. These are currently; Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, Cirdan Sailing and the 1851 Trust. It is wonderful to report that over the past 30 years we have raised more than £1.25m for these and numerous other charities, all of whom use sailing in some way, to help disadvantaged individuals. We hope the event continues to be successful and memorable event for all those taking part.
