Lusben’s refit expands superyacht by 10 metres

Lusben has completed its refit of M/Y Far Far Away (FFA), which was originally designed by Inace Yachts and delivered to its owner in 2012.

The refit, which began in November 2019, involved important structural changes, starting from the length of the hull. This was elongated from the initial 36.7m to nearly 47m. The yacht’s structure was accordingly redesigned to ensure an increase in onboard space.

To achieve this, an 8m module was inserted amidships, the stern platform was lengthened by 1.5m, and the forward bulb elongated by about 1.5m. The insertion of the module, an operation carried out by Lusben’s carpentry team, involved the complete reconstruction of all the onboard systems for sanitary water, diesel lines, electric and safety, plus the supply and installation of a new watertight door, integrated with the existing management system.

According to Lusben, the modifications, which required 14 months of work, means the autonomy of FFA has almost doubled – reaching 8,000 nautical miles. The superyacht is now able to cruise for at least three months without stopping in port.

“I believe that such a substantial and extensive hull lengthening work has never been carried out and the facility in Varazze proved to be the ideal location for these technically complex and sometimes delicate operations,” says Meo Palmieri, captain. “This transformation also involved a series of changes to the initial work plan, and Lusben responded with promptness, competence and professionalism.”

Among the ‘interventions’ was the addition of cold rooms (nine square metres), a case of fresh water of 5,000 litres, and two cases of diesel of 15,000 litres each giving a total fuel capacity of 90,000 litres (from 52,000 litres). A nine square meter laundry room has also been included. The gyrocompasses have been replaced with a satellite and a mechanical one, and the watertight bulkheads have been strengthened with the addition of a watertight door.
