Superyacht berthed in Malaga with sun behind it and palm trees

Puerto de Málaga has started building a new fence which it says is to strengthen the security of vessels moored in its facilities. This comes after controversy in recent years from local residents who say that their view of the port – and its luxury vessels – has been unfairly obstructed.

The fence that’s being replaced, at 1.40 metres high, was built as an intermediate solution to protect the perimeter of the dock in 2022. It’s made of white pillars and planters (according to local media) and was denounced by critics for removing views of the port and the historic centre – as well as restricting public space in favour of the wealthy yacht owners.

Now the marina is using transparent polycarbonate panels with closures perpendicular to the quay’s capping beam. This will help ensure integration with the city says a press statement. The new panels will surround the three main berths of Pier One, which has moorings for yachts over 100 metres in length.

The fencing of the megayacht dock, managed by IGY Málaga Marina, will reinforce safety for moored vessels.

The project is being carried out within the framework of the commitment to environmental and social sustainability, made by the port authority, with the support of the city council (the port’s history is available to read online).

‘Malaga Marina is a clear example of the successful model of integration between the port and the city,’ says the media statement, ‘as it is located in the heart of the city, in a pedestrian area close to the commercial and restaurant area. In addition, it stands out for its commitment to sustainability and has ecological concrete that promotes the colonisation of marine fauna and contributes to the reduction of the carbon footprint.’

IGY Málaga Marina is a strategic collaboration between the Spanish company Ocean Capital Partners, which is the majority shareholder of the marina, and the company Island Global Yachting. The Port Authority of Málaga granted the administrative concession in 2020, and operations began in July 2022.
