Surfer mauled in savage shark attack
A 20-year-old surfer has escaped a savage attack by a shark at Crescent Head, around 250 miles north of Sydney. Lifeguards said the male surfer was mauled at around 4.30pm local time on Monday.
According to reports in The Sun, the surfer was rushed to hospital with a severe arm injury after the attack. Pictures show the shark also took a massive chunk out of the surfer’s board.
Scientists have speculated that changing sea temperatures, breeding and hunting grounds could be linked to the rise in shark attacks. In Jordan, a shark was captured on video as it leapt in the air to bite a parasailors foot.
News.com.au reports bystanders helped the man from the water after the attack. He was treated at the scene before being flown to hospital by air ambulance.
This attack follows a spate of shark sightings and attacks, with 2020 recording Australia’s highest number of shark attacks in 100 years.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Andrew Beverley says: “Much praise must be given to bystanders who helped the man from the water and provided that crucial initial first aid.
“It was a significant bite and the man suffered serious injuries to his arm as a result.”
Crescent Head and Killick beaches – popular spots for water sports – were closed after the attack.
