VIDEO: US Navy test explosion causes earthquake
The US Navy caused a 3.9 magnitude earthquake in the Atlantic Ocean, after setting off multiple explosions near to its new warship.
The USS Gerald R. Ford was undergoing its full ship shock trials, 161km off the coast of Florida.
The planned trials saw the US Navy launch over 18,000kg of explosives near the aircraft carrier in order to test its ability to withstand potential war scenarios.
The first-in-class aircraft carrier is designed using advanced computer modelling methods, testing, and analysis, and these shock trials provide data used in validating the shock hardness of the ship.
